Best Small Town in Utah: Our Ballot, Your Fight

Utah’s big cities get the stadiums and the skylines, but the state’s soul lives in towns where the parade is also the traffic jam. We went looking for the best small town in Utah — the one you’d actually move to, not just photograph.

Midway

A Swiss village that wandered into the Heber Valley and stayed. Swiss Days in September, the ice castles in winter, a crater you can swim in, and Soldier Hollow out the back door. Midway is what happens when a small town commits to a theme for 150 years.

Kanab

Little Hollywood — they’ve been filming westerns here since before your grandpa had opinions. Kanab sits within striking distance of Zion, Bryce, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and still feels like a secret. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary up the canyon doesn’t hurt.

Torrey

Population: a few hundred. Backyard: Capitol Reef National Park, the least crowded of Utah’s Mighty Five. Torrey is one main street, a famous pie stop at the Gifford House inside the park, and night skies so dark you’ll recalibrate what “stars” means.

Helper

An old coal and railroad town on the Price River that refused to die — it became an arts town instead. Galleries in the old mining buildings, a riverwalk, and the best comeback story in Carbon County. Helper is proof a town can have a second act.

Spring City

The whole town is basically a historic district — pioneer homes, artists, and a quiet that feels curated. Spring City doesn’t have a scene. That’s the scene.

Five towns, five very different definitions of “best” — postcard perfect, basecamp, night sky, comeback, and quiet. Which one are you picking, and which town did we criminally leave off?
